As I mentioned on my previous review of Modelmates aerosol Primers, I spent some considerable time at the IPMS Telford show viewing the weathering demonstrations by the Modelmates crew and the fact that they had made it look extremely easy.

My review parcel arrived containing four sample aerosol cans of acrylic Primer in Black, Dark Grey, Light Grey and White, and eight 22ml jars of Water Soluble Translucent Dyes. Modelmates also produce these dyes 300ml aerosol spray cans, those being the ones I saw being demonstrated so frustratingly (for me) easily. The colours of the Weathering Dyes are:

SOOT BLACK

OIL BROWN

MUD BROWN

SAND BROWN

MOSS GREEN

RUSTY RED

SLATE GREY

LIGHT GREY

What I will recommend here and now is for you to visit the Modelmates website at www.modelmates.co.uk and watch the demonstration videos on this product. Those guys can tell, and show it much better than I. What I will tell you about is the product in these 22ml bottles:

It is not acrylic, it is a DYE. The small jars come in the same colours as the aerosol spray cans and they can be brush painted or airbrushed direct from the jar without thinning. If thinning is required, then just add a little water. Recommended spraying pressure is around 10psi and used about 300mm from the object.

A really neat idea is the fact that you can screw these jars directly onto Badger or Expo bottom feed airbrushes. I like that - nice touch Modelmates. As with most things being sprayed, a little at a time is the order of the day using thin coats to build up the desired effect. The coats dry very quickly – about a minute or two – and then you can either attack the finish with a damp tissue or cloth –  or leave it. It is that simple. Using different colours certainly creates some useful and interesting effects – something that the armour and ship modellers will be itching to try. I can think of at least three excellent armour modellers in my group of modelling acquaintances that will want to try these products. Airbrushes can be cleaned by just washing out with warm water.

How about prices? Each 22ml jar (still can’t get used to that rattle!) costs UK£3.25, which, when you consider that many modellers will prefer to use the product diluted with water, I think this represents good value money. By the way there is a very useful translucency table on the Modelmates website. The 300ml aerosol cans cost UK£7.95. I see from their website they also do a very useful ‘Snow Spray’ aerosol can. Yummy!

So what do we think?
From what I, and others, saw at Telford ,you could not fail to be impressed by ‘The Governor’, Alan, and his demonstrations. His products, have actually been around for a number of years and are used in TV and Cinema studios (Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Dr Who, Pirates of the Caribbean etc) for weathering their ‘props’ and costumes. I also understand there will be a spray can for rust effect coming out soon…………………now that really will be something to look forward to do. Well done Modelmates!

Overall: 10/10

Our thanks to Alan for the review samples. All are available via the website: www.modelmates.co.uk
