HobbyBoss 1/48 F6F-3 Hellcat Early Version Kit 80338
Well yes another 1/48th scale Hellcat, however this one has an interesing feature... a folding wing. The kit itself is well packaged, and consists of 6 spues moulded in grey styrene and 2 in clear you get two decals for two aircraft. The overall quality of the moulding seems very good, I'm slightly concerned by the surface texture on the aircraft skin, it's too 'pitted' on the review copy, I have to confess that I'm not Hellcat expert but to me it appears too 'fat in body' for me, comparing it to reference shots I've taken of the F6F-3 belonging to The Fighter Collection at the IWM Duxford, from the engine cover to behind the cockpit area through the cockpit/canopy. The other thing I've picked up is the size of the screw heads on the engine cover (left and right side again look too big) again compared to the same source. I guess this might deter some people from buying the kit, it wouldn't me. I'm not a rivet counter, the kit overall is a good kit that will build up to a nice model, regardless of the dodgy dimensions.
So what do we think?
The kit does represent value for money, however if you're not too fussed about the accuracy of the kit this will build into a nice model, with the added interest of the folded wing. In all honesty if you just wanted a Hellcat with wings outstretched I'd go for the Hasegawa of if your wallet will stretch the Eduard kit.
